Hello, and welcome to my EDIT 435 portfolio website.

Most people are initially confused upon hearing the name of the course- a strange acronym compared to more conventional courses like CHEM, MATH, or STAT. EDIT is more formally known as "Education Instructional Technology". EDIT 435 is an internet based course offered through the University of Alberta that gives students an introduction to the use of basic Internet tools in communicating, accessing and providing information.

The purpose of this site, therefore, is to showcase my journey through the six modules of the course and to present some of the fun and interesting things I have learned along the way. The six modules are:

  1. Electronic-Mail
  2. Newsgroups & Lists
  3. FTP & Telnet
  4. Searching & Referencing
  5. HTML Project
  6. Conferencing

The blue tabs below can be used to navigate your way through my site, to find more information on each of the above modules, and to explore my findings throughout the course.

.Me & My Site

I am currently a fourth year undergraduate student at the University of Alberta in his FINAL SEMESTER of a double-major degree in chemistry and biological sciences. So how exactly did a science student- accustomed to working with pipettes, beakers, and DNA- get involved with computers and the internet? To answer this question, I must look back to junior high school when the internet was starting to become "all the rage". I was busy with the various distractions of a 13 year old teenager and my only real contact with computers was to play the occasional game of Doom or SkiFree. More computer-inclined students in the class were typing this weird language and  "programming" to make webpages. "I'll stick to my game, you g33ks!", I thought. However, nearly ten years later and after the rapid infusion of the internet into everyday life, I finally realize (and can literally see) the impact and potential that lies within something so simple as script and HTML. I am often amazed at the creativity and the versatility that has gone into making some of the amazing webpages I visit everyday. So, being several months away from completing my degree, I decided to enroll in EDIT 435 to learn something I dismissed many years ago.
