Why Should I Join the University of Alberta Rowing Team?

5 Highlights for the Upcoming Season

22/September/2012 – Head of the North Saskatchewan

The first contest of the season will take place on the University of Alberta Rowing Team’s (UART) home
water. The grueling 4.0km processional head race will take you from the majestic Groat Road Bridge
against the flow of the current back to the familiar sight of the docks in front of the boat house. With the
University of Calgary expected to make their first appearance, this will be a prime opportunity to vie for
pole position against our rivals from the South. As per UART tradition, Saturday evening sees RATT
(Room at the Top, 7th Floor SUB) become the host of another kind of boat race.

13/October/2013 – Head of the Weasel & Dino Classic

The Dino Classic is Calgary’s yearly head race and course length will depend on wind conditions.
Traditionally the head race is in the morning and is followed in the afternoon with Prairie Championships. This years Prairie Championships will be held on the 1500m racetrack of Glenmore Reservoir in Calgary. Instead of being a processional head race, this will be a four-boats-across, side-by-side, first-to-cross-the-finish-line-wins event. The UART aims for the top spot in prairie rowing, which means that you will have to fight off spirited competition from the Universities of Saskatchewan, Regina and once again Calgary.

21/October/2012 - Western Canadian University Championships

Burnaby in British Columbia will be our destination for the Western Canadian University Championships, where we are to meet the West Coast programs of Fraser Valley, SFU, UBC and UVic. West coast schools have an outstanding tradition in rowing and will be a tough test for all U of A crews. The racecourse in Burnaby is a full 2000m track and will be your first opportunity to race over the Olympic distance, against five other boats.

3/November – 4/November/2012 – Canadian University Regatta Championships (CURCs)

The best athletes, that UART has to offer, will proceed to travel to the Canadian University
Championships, held in Burnaby, BC from the 3th to the 4th of November. This event is the highlight of
the fall season and will see some highly competitive racing against both the top West Coast and the best East Coast crews.

15/Feburary - 25/Febuary/2013 – Spring Break Training Camp

The lengthy winter season can take a motivational toll on any athlete. This is an opportunity to escape
to the open waters of Shawnigan Lake on Vancouver Island. A week long on-water training camp to
rejuvenate the soul of Edmonton rowers.

4 Reasons to Join Your Club

To make new friends (since strangers are just friends waiting to happen)

So you’ve joined the boat club on a whim. Within days you’re using phrases like ‘Let it run’ and ‘Hold
it up’ in everyday conversations. Jokes about long hard strokes and rushing the slide can only get funnier with time and repetition. You take great joy in explaining the intricacies of ‘Backing down’ to your non- rower friends. They don’t care. These people mean nothing to you. Weeks pass and soon you realize all your friends are rowers. You begin to refer to your crew members by seat number. Any social activity or holiday must include the entire boatclub and is preceded by multiple reply-all email threads. Weeks turn into months and somehow you end up as press officer.

To cut all ties with your loved ones or pesky roommates(excuses for all occasions)

Whether it’s a long weekend, reading week or term break, at some point you will be expected to leave
your student digs and return to the sticks for some quality family bonding. They’ve missed you. You’ve
missed them less so. UART offers a range of guilt-free excuses to choose from for coxes, rowers and single scullers alike. From not wanting to let down the crew to being the only one with functional rigging tools, Mum will be proud of her little Johnny or Mary. ‘But wait’, I hear you cry, ‘What if my family come to visit me in Edmonton!?’ Never fear: UART offers affordable getaways from weekend regattas in Calgary to week-long training camps in California. You never have to see your family again!

To see the world (going backwards)

Canada boasts prime locations for racing throughout the year. Provincial racing traditionally brings the club to such far flung utopias as Leduc, Vermillion and Calgary.

Trips to beautiful British Columbia are planned for the Western Canadian University Championships,
taking place in late October on a newly upgraded course in Burnaby and the Elk Lake Spring regatta, taking place in early March on Elk Lake, considered to be the centre of rowing in Canada and located just outside Victoria. The big event of the season, the Canadian University Regatta Championships (CURC’s), will take rowers to the other end of the country. This year’s championship regatta is held in Burnaby, BC. CURCs alternates between the west coast and east cost year to year. Last year is was held at Welland, Ontario.

To unleash hell and get praise for it (coxing)

They’re small, they’re loud and they’re usually hungry. The most critical crew member in a coxed boat,
the cox has a tough job. Responsible for the navigation and motivation of the crew, the cox must be fully focused when on the job. As lactic acid begins to seep into the muscles of crew members, the cox can ease the discomfort by screaming abuse down the boat demanding the best out of every stroke. A species of their own, coxes have their own lingo and everything must be done ‘on three’. If commanding a crew of sweaty athletes and coordinating the power and rhythm of the crew is where you see yourself, then UART can show you how. These tactical strategists are not to be messed with.
