The correct spelling of my first name is ‘Reinier’. It is the Dutch version of a name of Germanic origin, meaning something like advisor or advising warrior.
I have found that many non-Dutch speakers have trouble writing my name correctly. One way to remember it, is knowing it is a palindrome. As an algebraic-geometric minded mathematician, I like this a lot. It also combines nicely with my surname, as reading it back-to-front spells ‘remarK reinieR’, which would not be an inappropriate nickname. Incidentally, the full name of my brother, Mark, is also nearly palindromic.
Misspellings of my first name I have encountered include ‘Reiner’, ‘Rainer’, ‘Renier’, ‘Rainier’, ‘Rienier’.
The pronunciation of my name also often causes confusion. In IPA, it could be rendered [rɛiniːr], although my pronunciation is closer to [ʁɛiniːɻ] – the ‘r’ in Dutch is complicated. If you are not familiar with IPA, both ‘r’s may be pronounced with a trill, but the initial one could move towards the French pronunciation, while the final one may get devoiced to become very soft. The first vowel does not exist in any other language I know of, but may be substituted with the English ‘ai’. The second vowel is the same as in English ‘free’.
