This week our seminar will examine the arguments of Edward Said
relting to race and empire. Does race matter in International
Relations? Do you agree with Said's argument about empire and
'orientalism'? Do imperial attitudes and representations of the
'other' still persist in our cultural landscape? To begin thinking
about these issues, watch this video clip of Edward Said giving
a talk relating to 'representation' and the 'war on terror'. The clip
is actually 50 minutes long but the most important part for our
puprposes begins at the 23 minute mark and continues until the
42 minute mark. Feel free to watch the whole episode but ensure
that you watch at least the part from the 23 to 42 minute mark.
