1. Application
1.1. What kind of reference letters do I need?
Ideally, the letters of reference will touch upon the following points:the applicant’s performance in class/at work does the applicant work well in group can the applicant adjust him/herself well in a different culture/environment Any other points that may demonstrate why the applicant should be selected for the summer program should be included.
1.2. What are the prerequisites for the summer program?
Please see the ‘eligibility’ section.
1.3. Do we need to submit an official transcript, or can it be unofficial?
University transcripts must be official ones. The transcript from high school may be unofficial if official ones are hard to obtain.
1.4. What kind of projects are we expected to undertake in Kyoto?
Students will conduct small scale research during the summer program and make a presentation and/or write an essay as part of the requirement for the program. The project can be related to whatever your interests are while you are in Kyoto, for example: history, culture, tradition, or linguistics.
2. Program Cost
2.1. What is a contingency fund?
A contingency fund is necessary to cover any unforeseen group expense that may arise. It may include costs for communication, banking, or transportation. Any unused portion of the fund will be returned to the students after all the financial transactions have been cleared after the summer session.
3. Travel Plan
3.1. Will the students travel together or separately? Can I travel in Japan and/or to other countries after the session?
The Prince Takamado Japan Centre will book tickets for the students based on the default travel schedule: that is, leaving Edmonton for Osaka on May 25, and coming back from Japan on June 21. Each student, however, is allowed to make changes to the itinerary to accommodate their own travel plan. Any excess cost for the ticket incurred by deviation from the default itinerary has to be paid by the student.
3.2. Do I need to be immunized before going to Japan?
No special vaccination is required for travel to Japan.
