Program Description 25 May Leave Edmonton for Kyoto 27 May - 20 June 4-week Ritsumeikan University Summer session 21 June Leave Kyoto for Edmonton Curriculum: The program consists of three components, which will have 90 contact hours in total. 1. Japanese Language Classes (54 hours). Language classes will be conducted for three hours each weekday morning, providing an intensive and thorough introduction to the Japanese language. Particular emphasis is placed on oral communicative skills, which is the most difficult element of language learning when studying in North America. This program is expected to provide a solid foundation for continued language studies in Japanese. 2. Japan Studies (approx.16 hours). A series of lectures which are designed to complement the language curriculum by providing students with a general overview of Japanese culture. Lectures focus on such topics as fine arts, history and sociology and are conducted by specialists in these fields. As well as having the chance to become more familiar with the finer aspects of Japanese culture in class, students also have the opportunity to take part in various fieldwork activities each week to reinforce what they have learned in class. 3. Project Work (approx. 20 hours). A project-based course will provide students with an opportunity to explore their interest in Japanese culture. Students will be asked to prepare a proposal prior to their departure, and will carry on the project under the guidance of an instructor at Ritsumeikan University. They will be required to give a presentation and write an essay at the end of the course. In addition, students will be assigned to student buddies who will volunteer their time to help with adjustment to campus and daily life and to provide assistance outside of class. Accommodation: Students will be staying in an apartment-style facility, arranged by Ritsumeikan University. They will share a room with one or two other students.
