Ways To Ensure Adequate Complement Levels

Today most labs are not concerned about detecting complement binding in pretransfusion tests as most clinically significant antibodies can be detected by anti-IgG alone. As a result these labs will accept anticoagulated specimens (plasma) and monospecific anti-IgG for antibody screening. However, if detection of complement binding is deemed to be important, the ways to achieve it are as follows:

  1. Use fresh clotted blood specimens

  2. Use polyspecific antiglobulin serum for (IATs)
