IAMLT Dade International Award for Outstanding Services to Medical Laboratory Technology, an award of the International Federation of Biomedical Laboratory Science (IFBLS, formerly IAMLT). Pat, whose name was submitted for this award by the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS, formerly CSLT), is the first Canadian to receive this prestigious recognition.
Pat was nominated in recognition of her services to the profession of medical laboratory technology. As founder of MEDLAB-L, Pat brought together over 2000 technologists, scientists, and pathologists from 50 countries in this common Internet forum. She authored many publications, including a textbook, Fundamentals of Writing for the Biomedical Sciences, which has been translated into Japanese.
Active in several professional societies, Pat has served her profession in many capacities. She served on the CSMLS National Certification Board, the CSLT Council on Professional Development, and the Scientific Advisory Panel for the Canadian Journal of Medical Laboratory Science. The IAMLT Dade International Award was presented to Pat by Marlyse Divernois-Mertz, co-founder of Dade International, at the IAMLT Congress in Oslo, Norway on June 23, 1996 (see photos).

Life-time honorary membership in the Alberta Society of Medical Laboratory Technologists (ASMLT, now ACMLT) at its 1996 Annual Convention. The citation reads, "In recognition of her exemplary performance and promotion in the field of medical laboratory technology. "
At the award ceremony, in thanking the ASMLT, Pat noted, "I have been privileged to work with so many talented, dedicated, and generous colleagues. These include not only my colleagues in MLS but also at NAIT and the entire blood banking community in Edmonton....Thank you all very much."

Canadian Society for Transfusion Medicine Ortho Award in Transfusion Medicine (1995).This CSTM national award is given to an individual who has provided a major service or innovation in transfusion medicine and recognized Pat for her long career in blood banking as a technologist, educator, and mentor to medical laboratory technologists.
Pat began her blood bank career with the Canadian Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service (now CBS) in Winnipeg where she worked for 13 years, first as as a bench technologist, then as a clinical instructor, teaching both medical technology students from Red River Community College and orienting new Red Cross staff. From 1977 to 1999, Pat taught transfusion medicine in the University of Alberta's MLS program and also served as the clinical instructor for the blood bank at the University of Alberta Hospitals, teaching both MLS and NAIT students.
During this time, Pat encouraged many students to begin a career in transfusion medicine, served as a mentor for blood bankers pursuing continuing professional development, and developed and taught numerous continuing education courses. She has also contributed to the profession with many presentations and publications. In 1994 Pat established MEDLAB-L, an Internet discussion group for medical laboratory professionals in all disciplines and at at all levels.
