Shopping!

Where can you shop in the area of Pembina Hall? If you are new to the building, that might be one of your first questions! Here are the answers. If you're new to Edmonton, you might want to find out what to visit! You can also click here to find some local churches.

GROCERIES

Garneau Safeway
within walking distance of Pem. Prices are a little bit higher than other stores, but you pay for the convenience. You can save yourself quite a bit by getting a free Safeway card and watching for sales and deals. There is no bulk foods section. To get there, head south on 111th St, turn left at 82nd (Whyte) Ave and walk for about 5 blocks. You can also take the 6-Downtown bus, 106-Bonniedoon or the 4-Capilano. Walking is better for you though, and bus tickets cost even more money. Next door there is a Shoppers Drug Mart open 24 hours a day and a liquor store.

Shoppers Drug Mart
a good place for little things, and a great place to have your film developed if you have about 4 days. Very cheap, and a great quality. 2nd set of prints is just 99 cents! There is also a post office here with much better hours than the one in SUB.

Strathcona IGA
a long walk, or you can take the buses mentioned for Safeway. It is just off Whyte Ave on 104 St. Some things are cheaper than Safeway and the selection is marginally better in some areas. The bakery department is excellent and there is a decent selection of fresh produce.

Strathcona Market
open all year long, Saturdays 8-3. A great selection of produce during the summer and fall, and baked goods and crafts all year round. 1 block north off Whyte Ave between 104 and 103 St.

Superstore
the closer of the two Superstore locations. Take the 6-Millgate past Southgate Shopping Center. It's a big green building on your right, you'll see it coming. (The address is 4821 Calgary Tr. South.) A good bulk foods, especially. Bring your own bags, because they charge you for them.

Clareview Superstore
easy access, but further away. Take the LRT to the end of the line (25-30 minutes.) Reasonable prices, especially if you buy in larger quantities. They also carry non-food items like dishes, power cords, etc etc etc. A good bulk foods section here.

Save On Foods
2 locations you can get to easily. 1 is downtown (get off the LRT at Corona station) the other is on Calgary Trail. The Downtown store is small and doesn’t have a great selection.

SHOPPING CENTERS

Bonniedoon
A smaller shopping center that has a Zellers, Sears and Safeway. Take the 4-Capilano or 106-Bonniedoon. Not usually crowded, it has a good selection of different stores. Nice if you hate crowds.

Southgate
Take the 6-Millgate to get there, this is the most direct bus. Has a Sears and the Bay as well as a Safeway. Lots of clothing stores (not a lot of others) and sometimes a little pricey.

Kingsway Garden Mall
30-40 min north of campus on bus 130-NAIT/Northgate. Watch the bus times on this route though. Has the Bay, Sears and Zellers. More upscale with some very different kinds of stores. A fun place to look around and a pretty good foodcourt.

West Edmonton Mall
You don’t even need to go shopping to find a reason to go here! This place have everything, including a waterpark, an amusement park, a skating rink, comedy clubs, IMAX, movie theatres, several restaurants and a mini-golf course. Over 400 stores, 2 food courts and many restaurants. Take bus 4 or 106 West Ed.

Downtown
Off the LRT (Central or Churchill stations) there is a major shopping complex. There are numerous stores, especially in Edmonton City Centre East and West, and quite a few of them are cheaper than WEM. Their downside is that they keep bankers hours and close early, except Thursday and Friday. There is also an A&B Sound which is the cheapest place to buy CDs.

HUB
Need something small in a hurry? HUB might have it, but be prepared to pay more than average. It’s a fun place to window shop.
