Your Leadership Team: Confirming 1999 Elections

The ballot recently counted confirmed that more than 85% of those members who voted approved of the newly acclaimed individuals on your leadership team.

In the position of Vice-President: Russell Eccles. Russell hails from Library Services, has been a member for over 10 years and is also our Health and Safety Representative.

In the position of Bylaws Chair: Kevan Warner. Kevan is a long time active member of NASA and works for Library Services at the Archives in BARD.

In the position of Membership Chair: Anne Nield. Ann is a Trust Member who served on the Trust Bargaining Committee. She works in Computing Science.

Also holding a seat on your Executive is the new chair of Reps Council. Elected earlier this year by and from Reps Council was Lynn Chandler, who has served on your Grievance Committee and also holds the position of Union Steward. Lynn works in the Department of Physics.

Health and Safety Committee Struck

Russell Eccles, Vice-President, also holds the position of Health and Safety Officer, NASA. He chairs a recently created committee on health and safety. The purpose of the committee is to review issues of health and safety on campus and to promote effective action in dealing with these issues. Russell is looking for individuals who have an interest in this topic, as he would like to have a broad representation from across campus. Submit your name to the office or contact Russell at 492-3778 or russell.eccles@ualberta.ca to put your name forward.

Reps Council to Host Guest Speaker

At the July 7 Reps Council meeting we will be having a special guest. Jim Selby of the Alberta Federation of Labour will speak on the issue of editorial policies. Following his presentation, Reps Council will reach conclusions and make recommendations regarding the editorial policy that NASA should adopt. This assignment was received from the special joint forum on communications held earlier this year. Because of the importance of this subject, Lynn Chandler, chair of Reps Council, has opened the meeting to all members. It will be held at the NASA offices at 4:30 p.m. on July 7. If you have an interest in this topic, please join us.

Negotiations Draw Near

In the fall, NASA will be preparing to once again enter into bargaining with the University over terms and conditions of employment. Under consideration are both the operating and the trust sections of the collective agreement. Please take a moment to provide NASA with your views on issues that affect you. Tell us your needs and what issues/changes you would like to see dealt with in the new contract. You may write to us at: 7-50 Extension Centre, 8305 112 Street NW, T6G 1K4

Or, e-mail us at nasa@gpu.srv.ualberta.ca

Or, call Barb, Nancy or Lee at 439-3181.

PeopleSoft - Hard on your Paycheque?

In August 1999, the University of Alberta plans to implement a new human resources information system called PeopleSoft. As with any new system, errors and ‘bugs’ can occur. We all need to ensure that any problems that may result from this implementation are corrected quickly. To this end, NASA asks that all staff scrutinize their paycheques in order to ensure that all pay and deductions are proper. We recommend that staff look at 1999 pay stubs and match them up with the data provided by the PeopleSoft system after it is implemented. If you notice any discrepancies, contact the NASA office so we can assist in getting the problems solved.

Waiver or Not to Waiver

On page 91 (Appendix P) of your collective agreement there is a form that allows members of NASA to waive their right to have a NASA representative represent them at meetings. This waiver could have implications for an employee who is dealing with their employer. If you signed this form, NASA would be prevented from ensuring that your rights as an employee were protected. This form also is an acknowledgement that you, as an employee, understand the time limits in place to file a grievance. If you are not represented at a meeting, any grievance that you contemplate could be adversely affected. NASA has a responsibility as a bargaining agent to look after your interests as an employee. It is a responsibility that we take very seriously. In order to ensure that your best interests are advanced, think carefully before signing this waiver.

Please note: The last general meeting did not conclude its agenda. The next scheduled meeting is October 6, 1999.

If you would like to get general NASA information by e-mail, please send your full name, membership card number, and department name to nasa@gpu.srv.ualberta.ca
