The Alberta Labour Relations Board (LRB) decided on December 13, 1996 that Employees paid from trust/grant funds and working for research academics are University of Alberta employees and that you are a member of the NASA bargaining unit and covered by our collective agreement. As such, membership dues will begin to be deducted from your January paycheque in accordance with NASA bylaws and will be held in trust by the University pending a resolution of this matter.

The advantages and benefits of being covered and protected by a collective agreement are tremendous. You are entitled to the protections of the collective agreement and all of the other terms and conditions of employment afforded to all support staff at the University of Alberta. This will mean terms like a designated salary in accordance with the collective agreement, merit increments, health benefits, a pension, paid training, university credit courses, etc.

We believe that you deserve dignity and respect in the workplace and that your health and safety is important. NASA will ensure that you have a right to a voice in the workplace and that your working conditions will be fair and reasonable.

We are here to provide advocacy, advice, representation, and counsel and to help you with dealing with all issues in the workplace.

Union negotiated contracts provide a large measure of protection and security for employees. With NASA, you have bargaining strength. These are uncertain times. Workers everywhere are facing threats of restructuring, cutbacks and layoffs. You do not have to face that uncertainty alone because you have teamed up with an experienced, resourceful partner to ensure that you get a fair shake.

Why is NASA a good deal for you?

There are lots of good reasons for belonging to a strong union. Most importantly, a union can effectively represent the concerns of all its members by dealing with the Employer directly. NASA can also ensure that the terms and conditions of your contract and the workplace are followed and that individuals are not singled out.

How much does it cost to belong to NASA?

NASA membership dues are amongst the lowest in the province. The dues are deducted at a rate of .6% of your base salary and are capped at $16.00 per month.

How are the union dues spent?

NASA is a democratic organization. The Executive meets weekly and all major decision are decided at General Membership meetings held twice a year or more. Most of the money goes towards supporting the services that NASA provides its members, many of which include leadership, experience, expertise and resources. NASA provides many membership services, skilled negotiators, labour relations expertise, contacts and communications and access to legal expertise.

NASA will provide the kind of skilled and strong representation that you will need in the months and years ahead. We have provided a package of information in this mailout: a history of the trust employee issue, a brochure about NASA and a copy of the collective agreement. Please plan to attend an information meeting for all trust employees and any other interested NASA members to be held on Friday, February 7th at 12:00 noon in Room 231 in the Medical Sciences Building.

Again, welcome to membership in NASA. Please contact the NASA office with any questions, issues or concerns you may have. Our phone number is 439-3181, our fax number is 433-5056, our e-mail address is nasa@ualberta.ca and our after-hours cell phone number is 975-1310.
