Research Title: Relations Among Informal Learning, Educational Credentials and Work Transitions Among Immigrants

Research Team: Terry Wotherspoon University of Saskatchewan - Principal Investigator

Research Domain(s): Education

The research addresses issues related to the translation of educational credentials and other capacities and skills into successful labour market integration among immigrants. In particular, the research is concerned to identify the informal learning that immigrants are currently, or have recently, been engaged in, in order to highlight the ways in which a broad base of knowledge and skills, over and above formal credentials, are being utilized or ignored in immigrants’ integration into the labour force. Interviews will be conducted with recent immigrants, and representatives of immigrant-serving agencies, in order to document both the nature and extent of informal learning activities, and to assess how these activities are related to the achievement (or lack thereof) of success of the labour market. The research findings will be presented in dialogue with policy-makers and practitioners concerned with issues of lifelong learning, labour market development, and employment prospects for immigrant labour.
