Research Team: Bohdan Kordan (University of Saskatchewan) - Principal Investigator

Research Domain(s): Social; Public Services & Political

In 1985, the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies (CIUS) Press at the University of Alberta published the research report Ukrainians in the 1981 Canada Census: A data Handbook. A statistical compendium, the work provided a census profile of the Ukrainian community in Canada and as such became a standard reference tool in a number of demographic and needs assessment studies to follow. It has been suggested given the utility of the original that an updated version of the Handbook be prepared. This project will provide an update, drawing on 1981, 1986, 1991, and 1996 census data. The new Handbook will follow the format of the original, presenting tabular data on distribution and settlement, selected characteristics, as well as activity of the community. The updated version will differ slightly in that there will be a shift in focus, with immigrant/non-immigrant single/multiple origin and inter-cultural comparisons taking centre place in the presentation. Some analysis will accompany the data in the form of introductory essays. Maps will also be produced for selected data to enhance the presentation of the findings. The objective of the project is to produce an accessible manual containing updated statistical information, which could be used for research, policy-making and/or documentary purposes.
