  • Classroom Chemistry by Travis Whyte
In this activity grade 5 students will experiment with mixtures of solutions containing both solids and liquids. The students will manipulate and organize their data with the use of a database program that they will create.
  • Solving the "WhoDunIt?" by Marion Rex Grade 6 science students will write descriptions for three "suspects", then choose one to be the culprit of a "WhoDunIt?" mystery. The data will be input into a database with the first two suspects being red herrings and the final suspect being the subject of the crime being investigated.
  • Endangered Bird Species by Long Mu
This is a classroom project on the topic of Endangered Bird Species for Grade 7 science students. One of the assignments for this larger project has students using MS access to develop a database.
  • Needles and Trees by Chris Jackson
One component of this grade 6 science project is having students create a database of species of trees, coniferous to deciduous in the student's immediate community with other communities.
  • Consumer Product Testing: The Chocolate Chip Cookie Debate by Susan Mackey
Grade 8 students will test a number of chocolate chip cookies to find out which one is the best consumer choice. Groups will discuss what criteria they feel should be tested. When a class consensus is reached each group will compile a database they could use to evaluate cookies, their packaging, and/or their advertising.
  • Distribution of Tree Species in Canada by Joe Lennon
These exercises will provide background data that sets the stage for more detailed study of the topic - perhaps mapping of the data. Grade 6 students will be using real scientific data and putting them into meaningful groups for future aggregation. They will also be collaborating on the project which will show them the scope of entering data into a database. They will then see the powers of the database once they do queries and reports.
