The Somatic Nervous System consists of all the spinal nerves that innervate the skin, joints, and muscles that are under voluntary control. Somatic sensory axons receive information for skin receptors for temperature, touch, pain, and proprioception and enter the spinal cord in the dorsal root ganglia.  Somatic motor axons are derived from the ventral root of the spinal cord, and control muscle contraction.
