The Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) consists of all the neurons that innervate the internal organs, blood vessels, and glands. Visceral sensory axons conduct information to the CNS regarding function of these organs and glands, and the CNS sends signals back via visceral motor neurons, commanding the contraction and relaxation of smooth and cardiac muscles, as well as the secretory rate of glands.
