The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery every day. Never lose a holy curiosity.

-- Albert Einstein

The University of Alberta Faculty of Medicine and Oral Health Sciences administers the Electron Microscope Facility housed in the Dentistry/Pharmacy Building. The Facility comprises a Hitachi S-2500 Scanning Electron Microscope (installed 1991), and a Hitachi Transmission Electron Microscope H-7000 (installed 1988). The SEM unit is also equipped with a backscatter detector and a PCI digital imaging system. The lab is also equipped with three ultrathin section microtomes: one Ultracut and two Sorvall are for free use, while the Ultracut E is reserved for our routine service. One sputter coater and one critical point dryer are on duty.

The lab has a mini library with a collection of TEM and SEM books and a subscription of "Journal of E.M. Technique". Users are welcome to use the library. Dr. Chen is willing to provide current protocols and consultation regarding techniques.

The Unit Supervisor is Dr. Ming H. Chen PhD., contact phone 492-3621, or e-mail Dr. Ming Chen.
