2001 Christmas Party

The third, formal, annual Christmas party was held on December 22, 2001. For a change of pace, this year the party was hosted at Nelly's house (Thank you, Nelly, for letting us take over your place!) instead of at Maciek's. I hope everyone had fun. With a number of us graduating this year hopefully we'll still be able to continue the Christmas party tradition. I'm pleased to announce that our whole group was quite generous and I had the fun job of hauling a hefty donation down to the food bank! Let's see if we can do even better next year!

This year I tried to document a bit of the preparation that went into getting the party ready. If you'd like to see the pictures...and it's actually pretty neat, you can follow the link to this page.

I'm very sorry that it took me so long to get all the pictures up. I was out of town after the party and then when I came back I got sick! Even though I keep setting the correct date on the camera, it seems to love reverting to the year 1994, so ignore the date in the corner of the pictures. Oh yes, to make matters even more frustrating...the camera was thoroughly un-cooperative that day!

A group of party-goers gathered in the living room. I should mention that Nelly has a beautiful house, worthy of show-house status! Even the Christmas tree is a work of art in Nelly's house! Enjoying the evening, here we have Annie, Taavi, Erika, Amelia (hiding behind the tree), LieJun's head, and Mary.

Another group of peope, this time hiding in the basement, playing PS2. I think they're playing either Grand Turismo 3 or Devil May Cry. The other popular game of the night was Dead or Alive 2. My, what charming names for games... Here we have Heather, Kevin, Karen, Jessie, Graeme, Brian, and the right-side of Brandon.

Say "Cheese!". Jessie and I had great fun bugging Kevin. He told me not to take anymore pictures of him, but he didn't tell Jessie not to take pictures! I may have to bring my own digital camera next time - the pictures look much better than if I scan them in. Just think, next time you all come for a party I may have two cameras going! And you'll all probably hate me if I get a digital video camera...
Now this was a treat! Robert came all the way back from Nova Scotia to see us during the Christmas break! And in response to my question of "how are things going?", Rob says: "Great!". So it's wonderful to hear that things are going well for Rob, and thanks a lot for coming, that was super of you!

I did it! I did it! I have a picture with LieJun looking at the camera! We're back upstairs, re-visiting the folks who set up camp in the living room. Since the Math Lounge is currently in need of a room, the party was a good opportunity for Amelia, Grace, Mary, and LieJun to play bridge. In the right-hand picture, Tomek must be engaged in another one of his intellectual conversations.

How does the song go? "Everyone was Kung Fu fighting..." Maciek displays his new martial arts talents, first with some practice with Brandon, and then with a good-natured sparring match with Robert. And he doesn't even have to be able to see in order to fight - he has his eyes closed in both pictures!

A couple more candid shots from the people in the living room. The bridge game still seems to be in progress, and Annie is listening to the conversation that is being carried out in the picture on the right-hand side!

It's a pity the camera didn't work properly for this picture. I was hoping there would be enough lighting since the flash didn't go off, but no such luck. Here are Taavi and Erika. Erika is quite a good pianist! Unfortunately I didn't think to ask if they could play a duet until after the party was over - I'm sure it would have been very nice to listen to.

We had piano music upstairs and we had singing downstairs! I managed to catch little bits of Britney Spears "Lucky" and "Stronger", as well as the chorus to "Yellow Submarine". "We all live in a yellow submarine, a yellow submarine, a yellow submarine..."

Becky is another one who likes to avoid cameras, so my thanks to Taavi for getting her into the picture! And a very nice picture too! From left to right: Erika, Taavi, and Becky.
It seems that even if you're full, you always have room for desert! That's a good thing because the more people eat, the less we have to worry about leftovers. Nelly, by the way, is a wonderful cook! We've come to a perfect working plan. I bake, she cooks, everything turns out fine.
Poker time! I still haven't figured out how to play this game. I believe that by the time they were finished, Becky and Kevin had won, although Brian and Brandon seemed to do pretty well even though they had no idea how to play pocker.

I must draw attention to this photo because Kevin voluntarily allowed me to take his picture! And in return for this great honor, I agreed to insert the following caption:
The ever-handsome and lucky Kevin Tai

Yet another lovely picture of Annie. Grace was commenting that I should have worn my grad dress and then Annie and I would have had similar outfits.

Back downstairs now. Grace and Jessie are still having fun with the karaoke, and Robert is still facinated by the computer. He could be watching DragonBall.

I finally got a group picture! Unfortunately, Heather had already left so she's not in the picture. Kevin and LieJun are both hiding but I'm still proud that after four Christmas parties I finally got everyone to stand still long enough for me to take a group photo!

And this picture would be...about five seconds after I took the nice group photo. See how fast they disperse?

Well, that's it! I hope everyone had fun!
