• This course will provide an overview of the current understanding of stars, galaxies and cosmology. The emphasis will be on understanding the physical processes underlying astronomical phenomena.
• Literature:
  

  • The Cosmic Perspective (6th edition) OR The Cosmic Perspective: Stars, Galaxies & Cosmology (6th edition)
  by Bennett, Donahue, Schneider, & Voit
  • If either of the above books did not come with a Mastering Astronomy Student Access Kit, purchase a kit (available at either online or the University Bookstore).

  
  

• Marking scheme

• Standard Assignments: 25%.
• Reading Assignments: 3%.
• In-class response (iclickers): 2%.
• Midterm test 1: 17.5%. Feb 8
• Midterm test 2: 17.5%. Mar 8
• Final exam: 35%. Apr 22

• Place and time

• Lectures: CCIS-2-200; MWF 3-4pm
• Office hours: CCIS 2-107; on Tuesdays 2-4pm. Exceptions: NO office hours on Jan 15, Feb 19 (reading week) , Apr 2 session (easter break) will be provided on Apr 4, Apr 9 session will be substituted on Apr 11
• Tutorials: MTh, 4-6pm . Tutorials start on Jan 14

Astronomy is a science that uses intensively physics and math. The course will be heavy on problem solving. Drop off early if it is not what you had expected.
