Brief History of the Institute

In 1972 the late Dr. Einer Boberg, Professor of Speech Pathology at the University of Alberta, began conducting intensive summer clinics for stuttering through the University of Alberta Hospitals. Deborah Kully joined in the search for effective treatment in 1978. Each year they evaluated and improved the program. Increasing demand for treatment, professional training and research opportunities led to their founding of the Institute for Stuttering Treatment & Research in 1986.

With grants from the Alberta Elks Association and the Elks Purple Cross Fund, the Institute moved into its own rented 5,500 sq. ft. facility near the University campus. Clients range from 2 to 80 and now come from across Canada, the U.S.A., Europe and the Middle East. Since 1972 over 1000 clients have received treatment in intensive clinics, extended individual programs and refresher clinics.

The Institute staff are highly committed to the providing excellence in stuttering treatment. Current members include Deborah Kully, Executive Director; Marilyn Langevin, Clinical Director; Bev Ross, Elks Clinician; Cindy DeKort, Clinician; Holly Brandt, Clinician; Julia Boberg, Administrative Assistant and Jackie Schoenberger, Office Manager.
