1st Mid-Term Exam Information
January 26, 1998
The first mid-term exam for this course will be on Monday, February 2, in class (TL-12).
You are responsible for chapters 1-3 of the textbook and parts 1-3 of the reader, as well as any additional material covered in class. The exam will consist of 20 multiple choice questions and one essay. Three of the following essay questions will be on the exam, and you will be asked to answer one of them. In your essay, you will be expected to make reference to at least two of the assigned articles in the reader. A portion of the essay marking will be based on style/grammar/spelling.
1. What are the crucial defining characteristics of the new service economy? Has the emergence of this service economy altered patterns of social inequality in Canada? If yes, how? If no, why not?
2. Briefly outline some of the key features of t heories of "post-industrial" society? Do current labour market trends provide support for such theories? Why or why not?
3. Many observers of the Canadian labour market worry that, without additional training for workers, Canada will not be comp etitive in the global economy. Others worry about the extent of "underemployment" among Canadian workers? In your opinion, what should we worry about? Why?
4. Outline the increase in non-standard jobs in Canada. Why are we seeing an increase? What are some of the implications for employers? for employees? for society?
5. What were some of the major changes in the Canadian labour market and in Canadian society that occurred as a result of industrialization? Since industrialization took place later in Canada, do any of the "grand theories" of Marx, Weber, or Durkheim have any relevance in explaining these changes?
