Golden Future South Africa Project - Information Sessions

Date: Monday, September 10, 2012

Time: 4:15-4:45 pm or 5:15-5:45 pm

Location: CAB 281

Do want to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate? Do you want to use your post-secondary education to inspire and teach impoverished high school students? Do you want to ensure that your efforts will have a direct and positive contribution towards the betterment of society, all the while working with a group of impassioned and like-minded individuals? Through Golden Future, individuals will have the opportunity of volunteering at a local high school in the township of Khayelitsha, South Africa. Primarily, students will prepare materials and develop lesson plans to promote knowledge in various areas such as health awareness/life skills, post-secondary education, and micro-entrepreneurial pursuits. The intention of these workshops is to engage the learners in valuable discussions and create insight into some of the challenges faced within their communities. With your help, we can all work towards a brighter, golden future.

For those of you unable to attend the information sessions, please feel free to contact either Justin or Brett (contact information, and further information on Golden Future provided here) via email to answer any outstanding questions that you may have.

Volunteers for the English Key program

We are currently looking for volunteers to help with our English Key program. This is an opportunity to be paired up with a student here at the U of A that has English as a second language. Once a week you will meet up to practice spoken English in a casual environment and answer any questions about English, U of A, or Canada. This is not a formal tutoring process and you will not be helping with homework assignments. If you would like to help, send an email to EnglishKey9@gmail.com and in the coming weeks you will be paired up with an international student with whom you can arrange to meet! This is a great opportunity for you to get more involved in the student community; we have run this program in the past and the reviews we received were extremely positive from both volunteers and international students. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email EnglishKey9@gmail.com!

Volunteers for fundraising committee--help raise funds for the Little Warriors charity!

Message from VP Fundraising, Brayden Whitlock:

Hi Everyone, I hope your midterms are going well. Your Golden Key, U of A chapter executives are hard at work planning this year’s projects, and we have a great way for you to get involved. This year we will be fundraising for Little Warriors, a national, Canadian based charity that focuses on the education and prevention of child sexual abuse. We are starting a fundraising committee to raise money for this and other worthwhile causes and we would like you to join. As a member of the fundraising committee, you would be able to help as little or as much as you’d like, in any way you’d like. Whether you want to help out for an hour a month, contribute an idea, or take on your own project in a leadership role, this is a chance to get involved with a worthy cause. If you would like more information about how you can contribute or if you have any questions, please email me at bwhitloc@ualberta.ca. Thank you, and I look forward to hearing from you.

First Social Event--Campus Food Bank Trick or trEat

DATE: Monday, October 31, 2011

WHEN: 5-9 PM (at latest)

WHERE: Neighborhoods around U of A North Campus (Windsor Park, Belgarvia, McKernan, Garneau etc)

Dear members,

We have our first social event for this school year! As well, this event will also double up as a service event!

On October 31, the UAlberta Campus Food Bank is hosting their annual Trick or trEAT. This will be a great opportunity to meet your fellow Golden Key members and other UAlberta students, and dress up in your costumes!

Trick or trEAT is an event where volunteers go door to door to collect food donations on Halloween night for the Campus Food Bank. Often, volunteers also receive candy from households... just like the good old days of trick or treating! The collected food goes toward students, staff, and alumni who access the CFB to alleviate their hunger. The food will restock the CFB shelves for the entire school year to help eliminate hunger and to raise awareness.

Not only will you meet your fellow GK members, but you will also help your fellow UAlberta members! Further details will be provided at a later date.

If you any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Samantha (VP Social) at splam@ualberta.ca. If you would like to participate in trick or trEAT, please email Samantha by Monday October 17th.

Contratulations to Jaron Van Dijken on Scholarship Win!

Make a Difference Day Blood Drive

DATE: Saturday, October 22, 2011

WHEN: Between 12:10 and 12:40 PM

WHERE: 8249 114 Street (just south of the University Hospital)

Hey Everyone!

This year, "Make a Difference Day" falls on Saturday, October 22. Since service is one of the main pillars of the Golden Key organization, we are organizing a blood drive for this year's Make a Difference Day. In order to fill the available appointments on October 22, we are looking for 15 people to participate in the blood drive. Conveniently, the blood clinic is very close to campus and is a short walk away since it is located at: 8249 114 Street (just south of the University Hospital). If you have any questions about giving blood, please visit the Canadian Blood Services website In order to fit in with the appointments already made for the day, participants would need to show up at noon since the 15 appointments are for 12:10 PM to 12:40 PM. If you are able to give blood and would like to participate, please Brett at wegenast@ualberta.ca with the subject "Blood Drive" before 2:00PM on Friday October 14 so he can give the clinic one week notice for the appointments. Only the first 15 people to respond will be recorded to participate and will be notified by a confirmation email from me early next week. Thank you for your time and support!

Co-Rec Volleyball Fun Times!

We are starting a Co-rec volleyball team!

We need a minimum of 5 girls and 5 guys to make a team. The league runs from October 17 to December 1. Depending on the number of players, the cost to play will be between $5 and $7. If you are interested in playing, please email VP Sports, Brett Wegenast, at wegenast@ualberta.ca with your name, gender, student ID number, and the night that works best for you. We play one night a week and the games are between 7:00PM and 11:00PM from Monday to Thursday. Brett will choose the night of the week for our games that works best for the majority of the people that are interested.

Last year was a great time and a fun way to meet new people! However, please only sign up if you intend to come to games (that may sound funny but when people sign up and don't come to any games, it becomes a bit of a problem). Of course people get busy during the semester and have to miss but please don't take someone else's spot if you don't want to come out and play!

Even if you haven't played much volleyball don't worry, we will be entering the least competitive league with the main idea of getting out to meet new people and doing something other than schoolwork.

Please reply before September 28.

If anyone is interested in any other intramural sports, have a look at the campus rec site and let Brett know if you would like to get a team together and he will do his best to help.
