Section I describes primary material in accession 96-2 of the Georg Kaiser Collection. Documents defined as primary material comply with one or both of the following criteria: 1. materials written by Georg Kaiser, and/or 2. manuscripts, i.e. handwritten or typed literary and other works of Kaiser; translations and adaptations of his works; handwritten or typed letters, or transcripts of the same; and, texts of plays duplicated or published in a limited number for purposes of production by a particular theater. Also included are some copies of first editions of plays. Section I is divided into the following sub-sections: Correspondence, Drama, Film, Novels and novellas, Poetry, Radio scripts and Stage scripts.
The material in this sub-section includes correspondence--mainly letters, postcards and notes--written by Georg Kaiser to individuals and institutions. A small number of files includes the complete correspondence between Kaiser and a particular individual or institution. The correspondence in the second "Arx, Caesar von" file, accession number 96-2-2, is not written by Kaiser. This file includes letters written by and to Caesar von Arx after Kaiser’s death on the subject of Kaiser’s estate. According to the criterion as to whether it was written by Georg Kaiser or about him, this file would be classified as secondary material. However, the material was included in this section because letters are manuscripts, and manuscripts are classified here as primary material.
The records are arranged alphabetically by the name of the addressee. Exceptions to this rule are the "Kaiser correspondence from Dumont-Lindemann-Archiv," the "Swiss correspondence" and the "Unidentified correspondence" files. The latter includes Kaiser’s letters to unidentified recipients, as well as letters written to Kaiser by individuals who were not identified. The two other exception files represent entities by provenance; copies of a number of letters from these files are also to be found under the names of particular addressees.
Each record includes the name of the addressee, date, year or range of years of the correspondence, note, and accession number. The note is a short description of the file providing the following information: firstly, the number of letters and/or number of leaves in the file, geographical location from where the letters originated (if three or less), the name of the recipient in the form most often used in the letter[s]; secondly, the nature or form of letter: holograph, typescript or transcript, accompanying material, stamps and/or notes of collectors and archives (i.e. the classification codes assigned to the collection by Dr. Reinhold, e.g. "Einheit XV," or the number of each leaf photocopied in Switzerland); finally, indication of whether the file contains originals or photocopies of letters [or both]. The subject of each item is not described.
The compiler of the Bibliography observed that the text in many letters of this manuscript collection differs significantly from the text of the same letter published in Georg Kaiser Briefe (Valk 1980).
