My Canada Research Chair program in Forest Entomology & Chemical Ecology investigates how plant defense chemistry changes in response to biotic such as insects and diseases and abiotic such as drought stress agents and how these changes in turn affect tree-insect-disease interactions. Past and current projects conducted in my lab can be framed under three main research themes: (a) invasion biology, (b) plant-symbiont interactions, and (c) plant-insect-disease interactions. In all three research themes, undergraduate and graduate students and research staff in my lab use primary and secondary chemistry of trees to characterize tree responses to stress and identify possible mechanisms underlying tree susceptibility to insects and diseases. Infrastructure in my lab is capable of identifying different classes of chemicals including terpenoids, phenolics, fatty acids, and non-structural carbohydrates using Gas Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometry and Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography.
