After Italy
- Christiane Vuluis became Goethe’s mistress in 1789, and remained so until their marriage in 1806.
- Goethe remained creatively active after his return from Italy, writing several novels, contributions to scientific novels, and a scientific theory of colour.
- After working on the manuscript for Faust from the age of 23 on, he publishes the first half in 1808, but does not publish the second half until 1832, shortly before his death.
- Faust is usually considered as Goethe’s greatest work. Faust is an alchemist who manages to summon a demon named Mephistopheles and binds him to do his will in exchange for his immortal soul. Unlike Christopher Marlowe’s earlier version, Goethe’s Faust repents and is saved at the end.
- Goethe died in Weimer on March 22, 1832, and was buried next to long time friend Friedrich von Schiller.
