Austin Bergquist and several members of the Steadward Center have travelled to London to learn about FES rowing machine at Brunel University. Other stops include the Aspire National Training Centre and the Royal National Orthopedic Hospital in Stanmore, the London Regatta Centre in East London, and labs in the Oxford Brookes University.

This morning we had the pleasure of being visited by the new president of the University of Alberta, Dr. Indira Samarasekera. She was introduced to our research team and was given a brief demonstration of some of the techniques we use to study the neural control of human movement.

Dr. Collins gave a afternoon lecture to a group of students at the Canmore Collegiate High School and an evening lecture for the general public. The talks were part of a seminar series put on as part of the 25th anniversary celebrations of the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research. Dr. Collins spoke about Stroke and Rehabilitation. A warm hello Mr. Lake and the great students in Canmore.

Today a group from the Steadward Centre for Personal and Physical Achievement visited the lab to discuss our common interests in functional electrical stimulation (FES) and get an introduction to some of our FES research. We are looking forward to working more closely with the Steadward Centre and the SCITCS FES Clinic on mutual research interests in the future.

The Biodex System 3 has finally arrived! We will use this to study isolated contractions of different muscle groups. This addition to the Human Neurophysiology Laboratory was made possible by grants from the Canadian Foundation for Innovation and the Alberta Science and Research Investments Program and a contribution from the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation.

Olle Lagerquist is awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarship (Doctoral). This is formerly known as the Province of Alberta Graduate Fellowship. Recipients of this award carry out a full-time research program during the summer months.

Website launched! The Human Neurophysiology Laboratory has arrived on the World Wide Web.

At long last we received our new Transcranial Magnetic Stimulator (MagPro 30, Medtronic). This will be used to stimulate nerve and muscle and also specific parts of the brain (non-invasively) that are involved in the control of human movement. This will allow us to study how the cortex contributes to voluntary and electrically-evoked contractions of human muscle. This addition to the Human Neurophysiology Laboratory was made possible by grants from the Canadian Foundation for Innovation and the Alberta Science and Research Investments Program.
