1.       All Technical Staff (Department and Trust) are required to have Standard First Aid Training.

2.       First Aid Kits are required to be in Laboratories

-Schedule 2, Table 2, lists our laboratories as High Hazard Worksites.

-Schedule 2, Table 7, guides you to the size of the First Aid kit based on the number of people who are normally in the lab, and proximity to EMS.

-An Alberta #2 kit should work for most of our laboratories.  (Some teaching laboratories could have greater than 30 people at times, but that is not the norm)  These are available from Preferred Suppliers Fisher Scientific or Vallen, with options for various enclosures, at a reasonable price.

-Schedule 2, Table 3, sets the contents of the different Alberta First Aid kits. There must be an inventory of the contents and the kit must be checked to confirm the contents.

(Some components do have expiry dates)

3.       Eye Wash Stations

- Plumbed Eye Wash Stations are to be tested with a frequency determined by EHS.   Eye wash stations using fluid with expiry dates must be monitored and replaced.

4.       Fire Fighting Equipment

- Firefighting equipment is maintained by UofA Facilities and Operations, but if you notice that something has been tampered with you are required to report it to F&O.

5.       Laboratories must be registered in ARISE

- Every assigned space in Civil Engineering (even storage rooms) must be registered.

- There must be two contacts listed for each laboratory registration.   The first should be the Principle Investigator and the second should be one of the Technical Staff working with the space.  More PIs, Students, and Staff can be added as laboratory personnel, however only the two main contacts can make changes to the registration.

- All personnel working in the lab must be listed in the registration.  It is only these users that will be granted access during any kind of lockdown procedures.

6.       Laboratory Signage

-Every laboratory is required to have a EH&S sign at the entrances to the space listing the Hazards in the room, the contact information, and the PPE required to enter the room.   The creation of the sign is done with the Hazard Assessment, but necessary corrections and updated must be made to keep the sign current.  The lab sign can be created in ARISE and sent to CivSafe@ualberta.ca for printing and installation.
