Text Box: MLCS 300 — INTRODUCTION TO TRANSLATION Did you ever wonder how translations are done? Who are translators? How does one become a translator? Why should we have translations? Is something always lost in translation? Why? You will find answers to these questions and many more by taking MLCS 300! This course is designed to complement the practical courses students are required to take in their language of specialization and will introduce participants to the wonderful world of translation and Translation Studies. We will combine theory and practice in looking at translation as a linguistic, social, cultural and textual process. You will find out what it takes to become translator, try you hand at it and learn more about the responsibilities a translator has and where to get help. Practicing translators will come and give guest lectures about their various expertise and experiences of translation. The language of instruction is English. You need another language in order to translate! As the case may be, this other language may be used as the source or the target language for exercises, assignments and projects.
