Bird Survey Methodology

Surveys took place from June 1stst to July 4thof 2003 and 2004 beginning at sunrise and ending no later than 5 hours past sunrise.. To reduce inter-observer variability all observers underwent a period of training in identification of boreal birds by sight and sound, distance training and data recording protocols. At each wetland, a 20 minute waterfowl survey, a playback protocol, and a 10 minute point count, were conducted. This combined methodology was developed specifically to accurately assess as much of the riparian- and wetland-associated bird community as possible. Each station was strategically located to maximize visibility and sound detection for as much of the wetland as possible (Fig. 1) At wetlands up to 16 ha, in size 1 point count station was established. For wetlands greater than 16 ha two stations were used.

Listen to what an observer hears when conducting a survey. Identify each species by song! (Sound should load automaically)
