David Leonard



David Leonard was born and raised in the Peace River Country. He received his B.A. (honours) and M.A. in History from the University of Alberta, and his Ph.D. in Modern Irish History from the University of Sheffield in 1975. He is a professional archivist, serving with the Provincial Archives of Alberta from 1969 to 1971 and the City of Edmonton Archives from 1976 to 1978. In 1978, he was appointed the first Territorial Archivist of the Northwest Territories, and, in 1981, returned to Edmonton to become Head of the Government Records Program of the Provincial Archives. In 1991, he was appointed Acting Provincial Archivist, and, in 1993, Provincial Archivist. In 1996, he left the Provincial Archives to join the Research Program of Alberta Historic Sites, where he now serves as Project Historian for Northern Alberta. His field of concentration is the Peace River Country.

His monograph publications include A builder of the Northwest: The life and times of Richard Secord (1980), The lure of the Peace River country (1992) and Delayed frontier: The Peace River country to 1909 (1995). He also co-authored with Victoria Lemieux, Tracing your ancestors in Alberta, a genealogical guide to archival sources in the province. In addition are a number of articles on historical and archival subjects.
