Solving Library Problems
If the search link does not work:
- You must install and configure the AIX Documentation Search Service to get
the Search link to work.
- Follow the
instructions to install
and configure the search service.
If all the books are missing:
- The books have not yet been installed.
- Follow the
instructions to install
and configure the search service. (It is highly recommended that you also
install the search service.)
OR
- If the books are normally read from a CD in a CD-ROM drive, check to see if
the drive has been unmounted and the documentation CD has been removed from the
drive.
If some of the books are missing:
- When some books are found but others are not, the most likely cause is that
the administrator did not install all of the books. This may have been done to
save disk space.
- Check with your system administrator, then follow the
instructions if you want
to install the missing books.
- You can also turn off links to books that
are not installed.
If the books do not display in the language you want:
- By default, the library opens in the same language as your desktop.
- If you want the AIX documentation to open in a language that is different
from the desktop language, do the following:
- The books for the language you want must be installed by the system
administrator.
- The locale for the language must be installed by the system administrator.
This is done by user root typing:
smit mlang
Then choosing Add Additional Language Environments
- Add this line to the .profile file in your home directory:
DOC_LANG=<language>
where <language> is replaced with the locale name
for the language you want. For example, if you wanted to use German books, you
would add:
DOC_LANG=de_DE
- Locale names are listed in
Understanding Locale.
If you want to turn off links to books
that are not installed:
- To save disk space, your administrator may have not installed all of the AIX
books. However, some documents may still have links in them that go to the
missing books. When you click these links, you will get an error message. There
is a way to turn off the links that go to missing books.
- After the books are installed, run the following command as root:
resolve_links
- This command will check to see which books are installed and will then
deactivate links that point to the books that are not installed.
Note: This command may take a long time to run since it may
have to look through and modify thousands of pages of documentation. However,
the documentation can still be read by users while the resolve_links
command is running.
If you are searching the documentation from a mounted CD-ROM that is too
slow:
- This is because a CD-ROM drive is slower than a hard disk.
- If you have sufficient hard disk space, you will see a significant speed
increase if you unmount the Documentation CD and install the books on your
hard disk.
Note: You must unmount the CD drive before installing the
books.
- For instructions on how to do these tasks, see
Installing the
AIX Documentation.
