My brother

18 Sep 2021

I was never in jail
Never destined to fail
Neglected maybe but spared from the scope
Of my brother’s film, scrounging for hope

Scaffolds of deception, beds of shame
Fertile ground, criminal mind lit aflame
He knew not as a child just how dire
The act to set his own house on fire

Three years his freedom he lost
Felt like ten he said, and not all I cost
Another ten years now he has revealed
Is it respect or love terms to be appealed

I wait by the phone as he awaits his first child
Wishing our shared father’s ways not to be trialed
All alone over and over it feels
Connecting our ties as my brother’s heart heals
