A bumper crop of apples fill the sky
Plumper and sweeter they grow
Globes darkening high and low
Scarlet to wine with a flash of the eye
Dreaming of pies, muffins, cobblers and squares
Furthermore, savory soups
Tree branches tangled in loops
Aim for the bounty, no worries or cares
Two sons, spouse and I dress warm for the night
As the fall season wound down
Evening in twilight we found
Braving frosty weather, red fruits in sight
Reaching aloft, leaving the turf behind
Climbing chair, fort, or ladder
Alas, we couldn’t be sadder
When the biggest jewel fell - thud to the ground
Fruits hit our noggins from ten feet above
Through the rain cried screams of pain
Like bombs, can’t help but complain
Helmets strapped on, declaration of love
Pans, bowls, strainers, any box used to gather
Harvest brimming on counter
Glean! Come hell or high water
Juice, sauces, jellies or jams, you'd rather?
Carrying loads, back and forth, back and forth
Looks of horror on our face
Boxes toppling with hurried pace
Scrambling back our riches grown from the North
What a great mess extracting all the parts
Boiled flesh succumb to their fate
Crushing hands would not abate
Lumps of apple meat shaped grimly like hearts
Here lies our frenzied adventure this year
I hope next Spring’s blossoms don’t fill us with fear
